Let me introduce you to some of the minor characters in Sword of Cho Nisi. Minor in that they aren't the main POV characters, although some chapters do have their point of views, and they all are instrumental in the development of the story, but we don't see them quite as often as we see Arell and Erika.
A favorite character is Kairos, the king's wizard. Kairos didn't do very well in magic school, If his father had not been such an accomplished sorcerer, Kairos probably wouldn’t be in the palace at all, but performing stunts at the ghetto pubs in East Prasa Potama.
Kairos was both proud of his father and fearful because of him. Whereas Lord Rincon won many a battle for King Tobias, he also came to his ill demise.The manner of his father’s death left him traumatized. His father died while fighting a hydra. The battle had been a horrendous event. Worse, the beast did not kill his father. An overload of magic in Lord Rincon’s body triggered heart failure during the battle and he died.
So traumatized by this turn of events, Kairos drew into his shell and feared even conjuring the slightest of magic. He wasted his time in the tower playing with harmless potions and secretly falling in love with the king's daughter, Rhea.
A man with a huge heart, a little bit of sense, and perhaps more humility than he should have, Kairos becomes Erika's most faithful friend, and instrumental in the fight against the dark lord.
